Nature Study & Biology

We started this year by looking at planet earth and its elementsLAND WATER AIR. We learned about the elements through discussion, the 3 jar demonstration and picture cards.

  • The children sorted and classified animals into the places and spaces they lived in.

  • We then focused on one element at a time starting with ‘water’… the ‘wet season’.
  • We investigated and explored water animals.  Turtles and fresh water fish and the children’s favorite frogs and tadpoles. The children explored Animal Life Cycles and investigated the different parts of their body. It was fun comparing their body parts to our own body parts.

  • We were lucky enough to have a tank full of tadpoles in the class room and the children watched them every day in their transformation to frogs.

  • We also did some experiments with sinking and floating. The children enjoyed finding objects from all over the playground to put in the tub guessing whether it would sink or float then watching the outcome when they put their objects into the water.

Air Animals: We looked at birds and insect. Jacob loved spending the afternoons in the garden searching for insects, taking photos of them to hang up in the room.

Montessori Purpose – To give children an understanding that different classes of animals have different parts. To extend children’s vocabulary by introducing correct scientific names of animal body parts.

LAND: now we moved on to land.  We are looking at plants and flowers coming up to mother’s day… Spending our afternoons panting flower seeds, watermelon, passion fruit and bean seeds. We have been slowly watching them emerge from the soil.

We are now looking at trees learning their different parts and the importance they play in our lives. We will explore how we can help look after and care for them particularly our tropical rainforest.

Purpose – To give vocabulary and understanding that plants are made up of different parts.

EYLF: 2.4 – Children become socially responsible and show respect for the environment.
